As the countdown to the big move starts, take note of these five common mistakes to avoid so you’ll be prepared and satisfied on moving day.

1. Not Expecting the Unexpected

Life is never simple, especially when moving. Everyone can make schedules and to-do lists, but it’s just a fact that when you’re moving, things don’t always go as planned.

When you’re in the middle of moving or getting ready to move, it is easy to get distracted by everything that needs to be done. It is easy to forget about the everyday things you can’t control. Things like the weather.

Weather

Don’t let a change in the weather forecast ruin or affect your moving day. When picking a date something to consider should be, what time of the year it is. Is it hurricane season? Is it supposed to rain all week?

When considering the weather, sometimes It’s best to have different options available. You can wear something thin and light for when it gets warm, but have a jacket or rain gear available if the weather starts to change. It is always smart to have water and sunscreen with you. Especially for those sunny moving days. If the weather starts to look a little daunting and dark, make sure to have some rain gear, like an umbrella or plastic sheets, tarps, towels, in case it rains or snows. Simply it is better to hope for the best, but plan for the worst.

2. Have a Plan for Everyone

Unless you live by yourself, odds are you’re not alone in this move. It is very important to remember to have a plan for your pets or kids before moving day comes.

Kids

If you have children, make sure you all know what the moving day plan is. Whether they are going to a friend’s house or going to a family member’s for the day, it is better than scrambling around last minute trying to figure out what to do. If your kids are going to be with you on moving day, give them a job so they can take possession of the move and have something to do while packing and unpacking.

Pets

What about your little furry friends? Be sure you plan how they will travel to the new place, or if they are going to stay with someone. Their comfort is the most important thing. Make sure you have their crate, some food, water, and a few toys to keep them busy. Pets get anxious when it comes to moving, it is important that they know they are okay throughout the whole process.

Plants

Plants are important too! To help make sure your plants make it to your new home, make sure to have an ideal temporary environment and so they can survive the move. Something to consider is re-potting any plants that are currently planted in breakable pots.

3. You Can Never Be Too Organized

You may think you’re organized but you can never be too organized when it comes to moving. The best plan for moving is to remember to overdo it on the organizing front.

Pack Items by Room

Try not to combine items from your bathroom with items from your dining room. That’ll just lead to mix-ups!

Label Your Boxes

Sometimes the word “fragile” is not enough. Make sure to label your boxes with its correct room. That way, you’ll know where each box goes as it comes off the truck. It’ll keep things organized and will save a ton of time.

Take an Inventory of Your Boxes

Having your boxes marked with what is inside them helps you keep track of everything. You can give each box a number and then make a list for each box, according to the number on the box. Make sure to always keep this list with you.

Have a Moving Day Box

When moving, always think about the small things you might need on moving day and for your first night in your new home. Things to have in your box should be:

  • Tools, like a screwdriver, wrench, scissors, etc.
  • Flashlights or candles
  • Comfortable clothing
  • Toiletries
  • Toilet paper and Paper Towels
  • Snacks and Water
  • Medications/Prescriptions
  • Money
  • Phone charger
  • Cleaning supplies

4. Research Different Moving Companies

Hiring a moving company is a great way to get some help when you’re moving. But it is extremely important to make sure your movers are reliable. Your mover should offer you a free estimate before moving day. You do not want any surprise fees or costs on moving day.

If the company offers full-service packing, they’ll help you pack and wrap your furniture and any other fragile items. Make sure they fulfill their duties. If you need any storage options, your movers might have some recommendations, or even some storage space to offer you.

Make sure to look into what kind of insurance and protection they offer? Movers should have a plan in case things get damaged during your move, including replacement options.

Read the terms and conditions carefully and make sure you take pictures of your boxes before, so you have proof of condition prior to the move.

5. Get Your New Home Ready

The last thing anyone wants after a long day of moving is to be in a place that isn’t set up. If possible, have it cleaned and/or painted before you arrive. Make sure you transfer utilities. You don’t want to end up with no electricity, heat, a/c, water, or gas.

Make sure to have a spot or area for dirty shoes and other outdoor gear, especially if it rains. Bring an old towel or small mat to place at the door of your new place. If your new home is smaller than your old one, then make sure you declutter. Donate or recycle any unwanted items before you move. It not only means less stuff to move, but it also means your new home will feel better without all the extra items.

There’s no doubt that moving is a lot of work. But with some extra attention and planning, your approaching moving day can be as effective and easygoing as any other day.
